to the adequacy of the salaries offered could be obtained from

the Colonial Office at the time of appointment, and they, assum-

ing Government salaries were at all times commensurate with the

position of ered, are now finding conditions in Hong Kong extreme-

ly hard, particularily is this true in the case of married officers.

An opportunity of sending representatives before

the Commission should the Commissioners so desire, or of amplify-

ing in writing any of the foregoing statements, which are made

all

in/good faith and in the belief that they are substantially

accurate, would be greatly appreciated. We finally would add

that the absent members of our staff are in cordial agreement

with this let er.
